Letter to Parents and Staff

May 8, 2002

Dear Chávez Families and Staff,

Thank you for your patience and understanding during what has been an extremely difficult year for everyone. I am truly sorry that what should have been a glorious first year has been a trial for everyone. We are finally where we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A contract between the Madison School District and Bachman Construction of Madison was approved by the Board of Education at Monday's Board meeting.

Bachman's plan for the next few days includes moving a trailer on site today; on Thursday and Friday they will do further set-up, including hanging barriers and bringing construction materials on site; and then next week they will start the actual rebuilding of Chávez Elementary School. We will all be delighted when this day arrives.

The target date for completion is the week of July 29. We have contingency plans in place that will allow us to compensate for any unexpected challenges in the construction process and meet this date.

The Chávez Transition Team, composed of parents, school staff and district staff, will have their first meeting on May 14. This team will develop strategies for keeping lines of communication about progress open with parents and staff during the spring and summer. A timeline for moving back into the building will be established as we move along. We will also provide time and compensation for our staff members to reassemble their classrooms and materials so that school will be ready to start on time.

We know that it has been a very difficult and frustrating year. I look forward to sharing the opening next year for what will be a great future for Chávez and the community it serves.

Sincerely,

Art Rainwater
Superintendent
Madison Metropolitan School District
