MMSD Recognition Awards Ceremony Marks 25th Year

Each year for the past 25 years, the Madison Board of Education has honored outstanding individuals in a special ceremony that has grown into a community-wide celebration. This year, 14 MMSD employees and two citizen volunteers will receive the Distinguished Service Award, (DSA) the Madison School District’s highest honor for meritorious contributions to students and schools.  In addition, 13 MMSD employees in eight categories will be recognized as DSA nominees for their exceptional dedication to the Madison Schools.

Five teachers will be honored as nominees for the Kohl Foundation Teacher Fellowship. Three students will receive the Joe Thomas Community Service Award, while five other students will be recognized as Thomas Award nominees.

The Madison Board of Education’s Special Meeting, the 2008 MMSD Recognition Awards Ceremony, will be held on Monday, April 14th at 7 p.m. in the La Follette High School auditorium. The ceremony will be videotaped for telecast on MMSD-TV Cable Channel 10. Family and friends of the honorees and all employees of the MMSD are invited to attend.

Recipients of the DSA and the Joe Thomas Community Service Award for Students are chosen by a 21-member committee made up of teachers, administrators, parents, and citizens, along with community, business and student representatives.

Kohl Foundation Fellows are nominated for their ability to inspire a love of learning and for their leadership and service.  Selection of the Kohl Fellows will be made by the Cooperative Educational Service Association (CESA) District 2, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in early March.
