41 names suggested so far for new West side elementary school

Five days to go before deadline

With five days remaining before the deadline, 41 names have been suggested so far for the name of the new elementary school on Madison's West side.

Many of the name suggestions are based on a prominent person, while others are geographical and others represent an idea or concept. Under the current policy, if the school will be named after a prominent figure, that person must be deceased. A Board-appointed committee will determine at a later date if the suggested names meet the policy criteria.

Anyone can submit a name for consideration by completing a form that's available from the school district, and submitting it by Monday, October 22. The form that needs to be submitted can be obtained from the district website or by calling 663-1879, or stopping by Room 100 of the school administration building, 545 West Dayton Street.

The new process allows for a 30-day comment period, and at least one public hearing. According to the timeline for the process, the Board of Education will select a name in March.

The new school, located on Ancient Oak Lane, will open to students in September 2008. Real-time video of the school's construction, architectural renderings and much more information about the new school can be found at http://www.mmsd.org/topics/newschool/.
