Department Function

The Expulsion and Truancy Office has two areas of primary responsibility. In the area of expulsions, the staff is responsible for the administrative hearing component of the expulsion process, and to make sure that all applicable state and federal laws, and Board of Education policies, are adhered to. With regard to Habitual Truancy, a staff member serves as court liaison, to represent the District, in both the Madison Municipal Court and Dane County Circuit Court, in cases involving habitually truant students. In both areas of "expulsions" and "habitual truancy" the District's approach to both situations is to balance the punitive consequence for the student's inappropriate behavior with a rehabilitative effort to avoid repetition of the inappropriate behavior.

Mission Statement

The primary goals of the Expulsion & Truancy Office are two-fold: (1) to ensure that the expulsion and habitual truancy processes are administered with best practices that provide for District-wide consistency, in an efficient, effective and fair manner, and (2) to provide the student with rehabilitative resources that address the root causes of the inappropriate behavior that resulted in the expulsion or habitual truancy.
