Wednesday, 10/17/07 4:00-6:00 Echolalia in Context:  Making it Part of a Language Development Program... and Part of Your Classroom. Presented by Marge Blanc, M.A., CCC-SLP and Megan Snow Lewis, M. S., CCC-SLP

The echolalia our ASD kids use can be confusing, worrisome, and even humorous, but it also communicates!  If we know what to look for and how to help children move to the next stage of "gestalt language development," they can develop flexible, useful language! This training will describe how to help your students using a highly successful program, Natural Language Acquisition, as described in  Finding the Words: To Tell the Whole Story. The four-part series is published in Autism Asperger's Digest.

Wednesday, 01/30/08 4:00-6:00 Improving Students' Social Lives and Learning Through Peer Support Arrangements.  Presented by Erik Carter Ph.D., Assistant Professor University of Wisconsin, Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education.

Promoting access to the general curriculum for students with disabilities has emerged as a central theme of recent legislative initiatives and educational trends. Making sure that students with developmental disabilities benefit fully from the many social and learning opportunities available within inclusive classrooms remains a challenge, particularly in middle and high schools. One of the primary strategies used to support students with autism to participate in general education--a one-on-one adult support--may inadvertently hinder students' social relationships and learning opportunities. This training will focus on peer support arrangements as an effective alternative approach for supporting the inclusion of students with developmental disabilities. Attendees will learn about (a) the research evidence for students with and without disabilities who participate in these arrangements, and (b) practical steps for implementing these interventions in their classrooms.
