The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Grants and Fund Development Office (GFDO) helps MMSD to secure new competitive grants and other voluntary contributions that advance the district's mission and priorities. Since opening its doors in February of 1995, the GFDO has helped MMSD secure over $40 million in competitive grants from State and Federal government sources and the private sector for a wide variety of projects. The GFDO also led the successful drive to create the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools. Since its birth in August 2000, the Foundation has returned over $400,000 in grants to district staff for special innovative and creative projects that could not have occurred through the MMSD operating budget. Please click here for a list of projects supported with grant funds secured by the GFDO.

GFDO "customers" include school and central office staff and administrators, school support groups such as PTOs, student organizations, and community partners who have sound and innovative ideas for initiatives that advance the district's mission of success for all students and who are willing to commit their time, talent, and other resources in pursuit of competitive funding.

Through its direct services to customers and catalytic work throughout the organization, the GFDO is dedicated to moving the district toward the day when:

  1. Grantseeking skills are diffused widely throughout MMSD and its support organizations.
  2. Staff and support organizations are investing significant amounts of time to seek grants for innovative, capacity-building ideas that maintain or extend MMSD's margin of excellence.
  3. Local funding sources are extensively involved in supporting these innovative, capacity-building activities.
  4. State and national-level funders commonly invest grant funds in MMSD, confident that the district will help them demonstrate cutting-edge ideas that can be exported to other communities... and they seek out MMSD for this purpose.
  5. MMSD is ready to respond efficiently to grant opportunities that arise.
  6. The District has an excellent grantseeking "batting average"-the percent of proposals funded-built on the ability to make good judgements about which grant opportunities to pursue.
