Subject: BOMB THREAT PROCEDURE

I.    Reporting Procedure

    1. The person who receives a bomb threat on the phone or finds a bomb threat note should:
    2. Immediately report this information to the Principal or designee.
    3. The Principal will notify the police at 9-911.
    4. The Principal will contact Security at 3-8448.

II.    Evacuation

    1. The Principal and Security will determine if an evacuation of the school is necessary.
    2. The P.A. System will be used to notify the school of the need for an evacuation.
    3. All staff and students should evacuate at least 100 feet away or to the school’s designated evacuation site(s).
    4. Staff should take cell phones, radios, and class rosters with parent phone numbers.
    5. Staff should leave their doors closed and unlocked and turn off the lights unless something suspicious is observed. In this case, the lights should be left on.
    6. Police assistance should be requested for street crossings and to keep visitors away from the schools.
    7. A letter should be sent home to parents notifying them of the evacuation.
    8. Consideration should be given to allowing students and staff to get outer jackets prior to evacuation during inclement weather, unless the bomb threat appears imminent.
    9. Security will have buses sent to the school if needed.
III.    Search
    1. The Security Coordinator will notify MMSD employees who have been trained in bomb searching to meet at the school.
    2. A coordinated, thorough search of the entire school and grounds will be conducted.
    3. Students and staff will not be allowed to return to the building until the search is completed and the Principal has authorized reentry.
IV.    Prevention
    1. Rooms should be locked at all times when not in use.
    2. Keep all unused rooms, closets, storage areas, and areas of limited use locked at all times.
    3. Employees should report any suspicious objects in their room to the Principal each morning.
    4. Custodians should lock rooms after cleaning.
