RETURN-TO-WORK PROGRAM: TEMPORY MODIFIED DUTY

Source(s):

HR File #1991-1

The objective of the District's Temporary Modified Duty Return-to-Work Program is to make all reasonable efforts to reintegrate employees back into the workplace as early as possible during the recovery period following a work related injury or illness.

The District's Return-to-Work Program is an important part of the recovery and rehabilitation process. Participation in this Program shall place emphasis on the employee's medical ability to satisfactorily perform modified yet productive work on a temporary basis.

A Return-to-Work staff team consisting of the Risk Manager, the Workers’ Compensation processor, the Employment Manager, the employee's supervisor, the treating physician, and the injured employee will be established as deemed necessary. This team will have the responsibility of developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating a return-to-work plan based upon the available information, including an independent medical examination, if appropriate. Participation in the Return-to-Work program is based on the employee’s ability to perform available work, although the Employer retains its rights under Chapter 102, Wis. Stats. When meeting with the Return-to-Work staff, a represented employee may elect to have a union representative present.

The Return-to-Work Program is intended to be of a temporary nature in cases where return to full duties and responsibilities is expected.

If an employee is permanently disabled and unable to return to his/her full duties and responsibilities, the District will make a reasonable effort to find an alternative position if one compatible with the employee's medical condition can be found. If alternative employment within the District cannot be found, the District will counsel the employee regarding retirement and/or vocational options.
