The Madison Metropolitan School District is committed to providing an optimal school environment for its students and employees. The District recognizes that alcohol and/or substance abuse by employees in the workplace seriously affects that environment. It is the objective of the District to identify and address in a timely manner any work-related problems associated with alcohol and/or substance abuse by District employees and to offer support and assistance while ensuring the safety of the public, students, and fellow employees.
Standards of Conduct
The following standards of conduct are applicable to all employees of the District. Employees are advised that these standards are mandatory, and that violation of these standards will result in appropriate disciplinary action up to and including discharge, consistent with current collective bargaining agreements, and/or referral for prosecution, consistent with local, state and federal laws.
1. Employees are prohibited from unlawfully manufacturing, possessing, consuming, selling, or dispensing intoxicants during working hours, including paid break times. "Intoxicants" are defined as alcohol or controlled substances as defined by State and Federal Law. "Working hours" are defined to include any time involving official student contact including, but not limited to, athletic events, overnight camps, clubs, etc.
2. Employees are prohibited from being under the influence during working hours. "Under the influence" is defined as a condition caused by intoxicants which impairs the employee's physical or mental ability to perform his/her work safely and/or efficiently.
3. Employees are prohibited from reporting to work under the influence of intoxicants.
4. Employees who operate District vehicles or any vehicle operated on behalf of the District, or operate motorized equipment as part of their normal job duties shall be prohibited from consuming intoxicants during working hours, including paid or unpaid break and meal times.
5. Prescription medication(s) must be taken in accordance with the direction of the employee's attending physician.
