Subject: HOURS OF WORK: EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS

Educational assistants who directly or indirectly assist professional staff in instructional programs include, but are not necessarily limited to:

Teacher educational assistants, resource center educational assistants, library educational assistants, handicapped children's educational assistants, nurse's assistants, bilingual educational assistants, and counselor educational assistants.

The school-year calendar for Educational assistants' is in accordance with teachers' (see Policy 6.01, page 3). Those who work 19 hours or more per week are classified as regular full-time educational assistants.

Notification of Hours of Work

Upon beginning employment with the Madison Metropolitan School District, educational assistants are given preliminary notification of their building, hours, and/or position assignment. Continuing educational assistants will receive notice of the probable number of hours of their assignment and location prior to June 1 of the current school year.

School Educational Assistants

The employer will post the schedule for all school educational assistants on a weekly basis by the Monday preceding the applicable work week. The educational assistant will work those hours unless special circumstances arise which necessitate additional and/or other hours.

Nurse's Assistants

The work-year schedule for Nurse's assistants is 186 days: 180 school days, 3 holidays, 2 four-hour Health Services inservice days, and 1 day prior to school starting. New staff have 1 orientation day for a first-year total of 187 days.

The nurse's assistant's hours will be established and assigned by the immediate supervisor.

The District may temporarily increase nursing assistant hours by up to 10 hours per week during the first six weeks of the school year, but to no more than 40 hours per week. During the first six weeks of school, a temporary increase in hours will not change the nursing assistant's benefit-eligibility status.

Lunch and Breaks

Educational assistants working four or more hours per day will be provided with a half-hour unpaid duty-free lunch. In addition, the employee may take one paid l5-minute break for each four hours worked per day.
