Regular Work Hours and Schedule
The regular schedule of hours of work for all full-time secretarial and technical employees and employees with related office duties is 38.75 hours per week or 7.75 hours daily.
With the exclusion of two-shift operations in Management Information Services, the work day will start no earlier than 7:00 a.m. and end no later than 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The customary work day, as determined by the Board, is 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Part-time employees' hours will fall within the above-noted time period, unless the employee is additionally compensated at the rate specified in Section III-D of the Supportive Educational Employees' Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Lunch and Breaks
The work day is 7.75 hours, in addition to an unpaid lunch period of three quarters of an hour, unless it is shortened by the mutual consent of the employee and supervisor for the purpose of adjusting the starting and/or ending time.
Full-time employees are also provided daily one 20-minute paid break or two separate breaks not to exceed 20 minutes. Employees working part-time will be provided a break in the a.m. and/or the p.m., pending the period in which they work.
10-Month Secretaries Work Year
Ten-month secretaries shall report to work on the Monday of the week before new teachers report to school in the Fall and shall work one week after the last day teachers work during the school year. They may work on established non-student days (e.g., WEA and SWEIO Conventions and Teacher Inservices) when workload demands. If workload demands work be performed during Winter and/or Spring breaks, the principal will make the request in writing at least 7 calendar days in advance for approval. If approval is not granted, such denial shall not be used as a basis for denying secretaries pay for any holiday or holidays falling within the Winter or Spring break for which work is requested.
Overtime
Overtime is defined as any hours worked in excess of 7.75 per day or 38.75 per week. Compensation for all such time worked shall be at the rate of one and one-half the hourly rate, except for overtime hours worked on Sunday, which are compensated at twice the hourly rate.
Employees may take compensatory time off rather than overtime pay, if there is mutual consent between the employee and employer, and provided the time off is taken at a mutually agreed to time, consistent with current federal and state legislation.
After an employee has elected, in writing, to take compensatory time off, s/he cannot later change the request to a cash payment without the consent of the employer.
For 10-month secretaries, compensatory time off may be taken on work days falling within Monday of the week before new teachers report to school and one week after the last day the teachers work during the school year. Ten-month secretaries cannot credit compensatory time off during Winter or Spring breaks until they have exhausted all their available vacation and have obtained the approval of their immediate supervisor.
For approval policies on overtime, see Policy 7.02, page 1, sections (2) and (3); and page 2, sections (1) through (4).
