I. ACCRUING PERSONAL ILLNESS LEAVE
A. Represented Employees
First year teachers are advanced 10 days of personal illness leave at the time of hire (prorated for less than 100% contracts or if hired during the school year). No other personal illness leave can be earned during the first year. Each year thereafter, personal illness leave is earned at a rate of one day per payroll period, provided the teacher receives pay for one half or more of the days included in the payroll report period. Sick leave may not be used prior to the time it is earned.
Educational Assistants, Food Service employees, and Substitute Teachers earn one hour of sick leave for every 20 hours of service.
Custodians and represented Clerical/Technical employees earn one-half day of personal illness leave per bi weekly payroll period, so long as they have worked at least one half of the total number of work days in each bi weekly period.
B. Support Staff Not Represented by a Bargaining Unit
All support staff not represented by a bargaining unit earn personal illness leave at a rate of one half day per bi weekly payroll period, so long as they have worked at least one half of the total number of work days in each bi weekly period.
C. Administrators
The personal illness allowance for administrators is calculated according to the length of the contract period, as follows:
Contract Period Number of Personal Illness Leave Days 197 and 202 day contracts 11 days/year 207 , 214- and 218 day contracts 12 days/year 225-day contracts 13 days/year The annual personal illness leave allowance is available at the beginning of each contract period. It will be prorated if the employee resigns before the end of the contract period, is employed after the contract period begins, or is on an unpaid leave of absence.
II. USES OF PERSONAL ILLNESS LEAVE
Personal illness or injury, and some or all portions of absences such as family illness leave or bereavement leave may be charged against the employee's current year personal illness leave.
III. ACCUMULATION OF PERSONAL ILLNESS LEAVE
A. Represented Employees
Teachers may individually accumulate into their Personal Sick Leave Account sick leave days that remain at the end of each school year, which may be used for any disability, up to a maximum of 55 sick days, as well as for any of the reasons specified under Section II, above.
Deposits of earned sick leave days are also made into a Sick Leave Bank, which is available for use by any eligible teacher. For specifics governing the eligibility, requirements and usage of the teachers Sick Leave Bank, see Section VII, G. of the MTI Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Custodial, Trades, Educational Assistants, Security Assistants and Clerical/Technical employees may accumulate personal illness leave without limitation.
Food Service employees may accrue up to a maximum of 720 hours for the purpose of determining a retirement insurance account. Any hours accrued in excess of 720 hours will be converted to a cash payout to be paid at the end of each calendar year.
Substitute teachers may accumulate personal illness leave without limitation, which may be used if the substitute is unable to accept an assignment due to illness or if s/he becomes ill during an assignment.
B. Support Staff Not Represented by a Bargaining Unit
Professional and Support staff who are not represented by a bargaining unit may accumulate personal illness leave without limitation.
C. Administrators
Personal illness leave for administrators may be accumulated from year to year without limitation.
