2008 Extended Learning Summer School
Literacy Grades K Ready - 8
Teaching Opportunities

Applications are now being accepted for teaching positions for 2008 Extended Learning Summer School literacy classes, Grades K-Ready through 8.

There will be one week of required summer school training and preparation for teachers held June 16- June 20. The student instructional program will be held in the morning at the following six sites from June 23- August 1, 2008:

  • Black Hawk/Gompers
  • Hamilton/Van Hise
  • Hawthorne Elementary
  • Huegel Elementary
  • Leopold Elementary
  • Whitehorse/Schenk

Primary teachers (Entering K - Grade 2) will teach a four-hour literacy block. Intermediate teachers (Grades 3, 4, 5) will teach two 2-hour literacy sections, and Middle School teachers (Grades 6, 7, 8) will teach two 2-hour literacy sections. Paid preparation time is offered in addition to these hours.

MMSD teachers are given priority in the hiring process and the program benefits greatly from having our summer school programs staffed by certified teachers from the MMSD family.

Requirements:

  • Kindergarten, Elementary or Reading certification, or content area certification (middle school)
  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching literacy
  • Knowledge and use of assessment data to target literacy instruction to meet individual student needs
  • Successful experience working in a diverse population including EEN and ESL students
  • Strong skills in behavior management strategies appropriate for diverse learners
  • Successful experience in collaborative planning with other professionals to develop and carry out literacy plans
