HOMEWORK HELP & STUDY SKILLS

HOMEWORK HELP STRATEGIES: 2008-2009

This may sound too obvious, but if you need help, TELL YOUR TEACHER! He/She might be able to work with you, or he/she may line up some other help for you. And if you are in a study hall, ask the study hall teacher for help (after attendance is taken).

Grade 9 Science (ISP) Help
1. During Lunch on Tuesdays:
Mr. O'Shaughnessy will be in ther "plant room" (near room 670) during both lunches every Tuesday. Any 9th grader can attend.
2. Click here for the Memorial High School Science Department ISP Website: Designed to help ninth grade students and parents with our Integrated Science Program (ISP)

Algebra Help:
Algebra teachers are very available for help. Each Algebra teacher will speak directly to his/her class about his/her availability. Most often it will be before school or after school. In addition there will always be an Algebra teacher on-call at the Afterschool Study Center int he LMC, every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

The After School Study Center in the LMC will open from 3:35 to 5:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. We encourage you to come to the LMC to finish your homework, work with others, or get help with school projects. This program is staffed with several Memorial teachers each night.

Peer Tutors: Memorial's very successful peer tutorial program is ready to serve you! A student tutor can meet with you before or after school, at lunch or during your study hall. Most students meet twice a week, across the entire semester.  To request a tutor, fill out a tutoring request form, available from Mrs Kral (608) 663-6116 in the Career Resource Center, (across from the Guidance Office.) Definitely, be sure to talk with the teacher of the course for which you want a tutor, to get the best suggestions for a plan for improvement. If further assistance is needed, contact your school counselor.

Adult Tutors: Ms. Kral also has names of a few adult tutors who have notified Memorial that they are available for a fee. Memorial makes no guarantee and assumes no legal liability or responsibility for the training and expertise of adult tutors. Families will need to talk and meet with adults whom they are considering as tutors in order to find the best "fit" possible between the adult tutor and student.

Try either of our two After-School Homework Clubs:

The MATC Pre-Collegiate After-School Program meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:40 until 5:00, in our LMC. College aged tutors provide direct academic support in a friendly and casual atmosphere right here at Memorial.  Other activities encourage the development of skills and attitudes that will lead to college success. To join, just go directly to the LMC at 3:40, or ask your counselor or Memorial Social Workers Rosemary Barrientos (663-6051) and Anne Colville (663-6052) to walk you over and introduce you to these nice people.

Centro Hispano's ASPIRA After-School Program meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:35 until 5:15, in the Fox River Neighborhood Center. College aged tutors provide direct academic support. To join, just go directly to the Fox River Neighborhood Center at 3:35, or ask your counselor or Memorial social workers Rosemary Barrientos (663-6051) and Anne Colville (663-6052) to walk you down and introduce you to these nice people.

Try the following Study Skills Worksheet: Without a doubt, most students who succeed in high school have developed pretty effective study skills.  Without solid study skills, even the brightest of students can flounder.  Needless to say, one must not just understand that study skills are important.  One must practice these skills and this self-discipline.  Identify the skills that you'd like to improve and then set reasonable goals.  Ultimately, you'll get more work done, in less time, and with better quality.  Try the following assessment:
