ADVANCED PLACEMENT UPDATES: FALL 2009
The Advanced Placement Program gives students an opportunity to take college-level courses and exams while they are still in high school. Through this, they may earn credit, advanced placement, or both for college. Thirty-three courses in 19 subject areas are offered worldwide by approximately 13,000 high schools. There are many benefits for students who participate in AP-studying interesting and challenging topics, discovering new interests, and getting a head start on their future. Memorial High School offers the following Advanced Placement courses: Calculus AB and BC, Statistics AP, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Advanced Psychology, Advanced Biology, English 11AP, English 12AP, Physics AP, Spanish 5 AP, Environmental ScienceAP, World History AP, and French 5 AP, Chemistry AP, Computer Science AP, and Chinese AP, European History.
After
completing an AP course, students may take an exam.
For a complete schedule of the exams, click on the
AP
HOMEPAGE here. In the spring of 2007 a total
of 366 Memorial students took 692 exams. AP exam
scores range from 5 (extremely well qualified) to
1 (no recommendation). Each college decides which
examination scores it will accept for credit and/or
advanced placement. Many institutions accept grades
of 3 and above, which is in keeping with the recommendations
made by the American Council on Education (ACE).
Since there is no consistent policy, students need
to find out the policies of colleges in which they
are interested. 87% of Memorial students earned
a 3 or higher for exams taken during the spring
of 2007.
