The Board of Education policy indicates that junior and senior students must elect three semesters ( or the equivalent ) of Physical Education. courses are organized into semester or year courses ranging from 1/4 credit ( a semester equivalent) to 1.0 credit. the structure of the course offering plus the course descriptions are as follows:

*Lifestyle Changes and Choices

Required prerequisites: Must have recommendation from counselor, school nurse, and/or Physical Education Teacher. The recommendation will be followed by a testing of body fat % ( 25% male and 30% female) to determine if size is a factor affecting participation in regular Phy. Ed. Student must also get physical exam before beginning class, to make sure they are physically able. Target Students: Students overweight and those uncomfortable in regular Phy. Ed. class setting because of body image/size. Goals: 1. Attract overweight students who find regular Phy. Ed. difficult due to size. 2. Fitness levels will be assessed with the help of the school nurse. Areas assessed will be cardiovascular endurance, body composition (% body fat), muscular strength, flexibility, blood pressure, height, and weight. 3. Reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass of student. 4. Increase students Cardiovascular fitness through aerobic activities such as jogging, walking, swimming, water aerobics, aerobic dance, step aerobics, weight training, and other aerobic activity. 5. Find lifetime fitness activity that student can do and enjoy, such as Volleyball, basketball, tennis, badminton, Frisbee, and more. 6. *Basic Life Support

Prerequisite : High intermediate swimming skills
Textbook: Life Guarding Today This course meets first hour and will give the student cognitive and practical experience in the areas of lifeguard training, first aid and CPR. These skills are necessary for and may lead to employment at an aquatic facility. The Red Cross requires a $30 - $40 fee for this course. These fees will be collected by the instructor and will cover all costs. Upon successful completion of the course, Lifeguard, First Aid & CPR cards will be issued. This course may only be taken once for credit.

Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing Activities: Fall : touch football, soccer & basketball Spring: soccer, floor hockey, volleyball & softball This course will emphasize participation in the above-mentioned team sports with instruction focusing on team concepts and skills. This course may be taken more than once for credit.

Perquisite: Junior or Senior standing This course will consist of three six-week units in tennis, racquetball and badminton. Students will travel via school bus to local racquetball facilities for one unit. a charge of $1.00/day will be required of each student for cost of courts. This course may be repeated for credit.

The course will provide students the opportunity to gain information about long-term health and fitness. Activities include running, low impact aerobic dance, step aerobics, cross country skiing , water aerobics, biking and racquetball. This course may be repeated for credit.

Individual Sports

Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing Cross-country skiing, bowling and golf will be offered. all equipment will be provided by the school. a fee will be charged for bowling and possibly for golf. Students will be required to come prepared for winter weather (hats, gloves, etc. ) for the cross- country unit. this course may be repeated for credit.

Intro to Athletic Training

Prerequisite: First Aid and CPR Certification This course is designed to introduce students to the profession of athletic training. Topics to be discussed include care of athletic injuries. Other medical aspects include sports nutrition and psychology. This course meets five days per week during the second semester and will traditionally graded. This course can only be taken once for credit.

Exercise Physiology W/CPR & First Aid

Prerequisite: Passing grade in Health This traditionally graded class will meet five days per week for one semester and will combine classroom and activity. Students will become certified in CPR and Lab First Aid and will investigate personal training methods such as the relationship between muscle mass and athletic success and how year-round training can help the athlete reach personal athletic goals. You do not need to be an athlete to be part of this course but if you are interested in the field of athletic training, occupational therapy, you will enjoy this class. This course can only be taken once for credit.

*Intermediate Weight Training

Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing the curriculum includes units in basic anatomy, physiology of strength development, effect of nutrition on performance and strength development and the importance of flexibility. the student will develop his/her own program with supervision from the instructor. Grading is traditional. The course will meet five days per week for one hour and may not be repeated.

Sports Officiating

Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing; passing grade in Team Sports. Students will learn to officiate the following sports: football, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball and hockey. The 1st and 2nd semester courses will each cover different sports. Students will officiate games in Team Sports, 9th and 10th grade classes.

Advanced Ropes

Prerequisite: Good physical health, completion of Challenge & Growth with a semester grade of "B" or better. This course will require a fee between $25 and $40 to help cover costs of trips and transportation. The class is designed for the enthusiastic climbers and belayers who want to grow emotionally and physically through some non-traditional activities. Climbing elements and becoming belay trained are mandatory for this course. Increasing personal confidence, being a team member and displaying strong leadership skills are strong goals for this class. Several mandatory trips will occur during the semester. Students will learn facilitation skills while working with elementary, middle and high school students on our ropes course. This class may only be taken once for credit and may not be audited.

Challenge & Growth

Prerequisite: Good Physical Health This will be an elective physical education class designed to take advantage of the indoor ropes course ( in our Field House), the field house itself and the outdoor ropes course. It is intended to provide a new and less conventional approach to physical education, an approach based on taking safe physical risks, using a variety of problem solving techniques and in this way achieving the specified objectives. This will be done by first using games, exercises and discussions to prepare for the ropes course. Secondly, we will analyze and discuss each activity as we conclude if. finally we will summarize the experience as a whole and evaluate its outcome. As participants overcome the challenges of this course they will have fun while they learn about themselves and others and while they "grow" physically, mentally and emotionally! This class cannot be audited or taken mere than once for credit. Small fee required ($20-$30)

Introduction to Aquatics

Prerequisite: Junior or senior non-swimmers only This class assists students in becoming comfortable in the water and learning how to swim. Students will be taught swim strokes, safety in the water, basic rescue skills, and water games. This class may be repeated for credit.

Dance I

Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing Gaining a broad vies of dance as a creative art form is a major objective for first semester. activities are varied and include warm-up techniques derived from modern dance, ballet and jazz, dance patterns and combinations, creative dramatics and movement improvisation (alone and in groups), short group compositions, relaxation techniques and stretching exercises. Creative movement, fundamental movement concepts, technique and choreography are the focus for second semester. Activities include more in depth improvisation, creating choreographed movement studies and patterns and producing a final dance for a performance on Spring Arts Day. Students will choose the theme, music, prop and costumes for this dance. keeping a journal, attending a professional dance concert, consistent attendance and participation are required for this course.

Prerequisite: Dance I The focus of this course will be on improvisation, composition, influence of ethnic dance forms, current trends in dance and dance history. Composition, journals and short papers on dance history will be required. This course is traditionally graded.
