Latin Rhythms
Presented By: Terry Fargen

Latin dancing is characterized by a "Cuban Motion" which is achieved by alternating an extension and flexion of the knees as you transfer weight, this results in the hips tilting from side to side.  Additionally, the upper body and arms sway in alternating rhythmical pattern.

Merengue:  A simple dance rhythm where the dancers evenly mark time with their feet.  The partners can dance in either the "closed or open" position.  Lead starts with the left foot, and the follow starts with the right foot.  Fundamentally it is a "marching step", however performed with "Latin styling".  Partners can perform a variety of patterns while dancing, all they need to do is keep the beat.

Merengue Mixer: (Circle formation, lead partner on left, follow partner on right.)
All join hands, four steps in/back, repeat
Lead four steps in (angle to right), back out to change partner on right
Follow four steps in (anle to left), back out to change partner on left
Repeat lead and follow partner change
All join hands, compact circle, Lead right arm/hand over to grapevine, four beats
Follow right arm/hand over to grapevine, four beats
     Repeat Lead and Follow grapevine
Partner dance sequence; 8 beat circle, follow right underarm turn, lead left turn, follow left
turn, hammerlock with peek-a-boo and spin out (follow 1 1/2 turn)
Partner change, Lead counter clockwise, Follow clockwise, "right and left grand"  three
partners, the third person is your new partner
Upon meeting that partner closed dance postion, 8 beat circle, open up to hand hold and
mark time until all partners are ready to repeat the routine
Concluding sequence; Follow remain in circle and join hands on the second set of four steps
in.  Lead join hands in a wristhold outside circle.  Follow circle 8 beats counter clockwise,
Lead circle 8 beats clockwise, change direction 8 beats.  Follow raise arms and backout
and sit on arms of the Lead, lift and circle 8 beats clockwise, change direction 8 beats.
