Youth Apprenticeship Program
Youth Apprenticeship is a rigorous one or two-year program that combines academic and technical classroom instruction with mentored on-the-job learning for high school students. Hands-on-learning at the job site is combined with classroom instruction to help students make the connection between school and the world of work. In 1992, Wisconsin started with a printing and graphic arts apprentice program with 21 students. The opportunity now has hundreds of students and employers in over half of Wisconsin's schools. The program is administered by the Governor's Work-based Learning Board in partnership with the Department of Public Instruction, the Wisconsin Technical College System, the University of Wisconsin System, Wisconsin businesses, industry and labor associations, and local schools and employers.
Dane County currently has ten different Youth Apprenticeship opportunities. They include
Architecture, Automotive Technician, Biotechnology, Engineering, Finance, Health Services, Info Technology, Graphic Arts/Printing, Manufacturing/Plastics, and
Tourism. Details on these programs can be viewed at the Dane
County Consortium website. Brochures on these programs are available in Memorial High School's Career Resource Center.
