Granted by the Statutes of the State of Wisconsin;
Fairly implied in Statutes expressly granted;
Interpreted by the courts as granted;
Essential to the accomplishment of the purposes for which the Madison Metropolitan School District was created.
Powers and duties of a Unified School District School Board are set forth in Wisconsin Statute 120.44.
A number of specific powers and duties are provided for in Wisconsin Statutes 118.001, 120.12, 120.13, 120.14, 120.15, 120.16, 120.17, 120.18, and 120.21.
BOARD members, as elected representatives of the citizens of the Madison Metropolitan School District, perform the following functions with the continuous cooperation and assistance of the SUPERINTENDENT:
Determine overall objectives;
Establish BOARD POLICIES and BOARD PROCEDURES necessary to effect those POLICIES;
Evaluate progress and performance;
Provide leadership which will promote community interest and support of Madison Metropolitan School District policies and programs.
The BOARD hereby recognizes that it does not have the power or authority to establish POLICY or PROCEDURE that is in conflict with the law. If a BOARD POLICY or PROCEDURE is in conflict with the law, the law supercedes the POLICY or PROCEDURE.
