Work Experience Program - General District
- Except as provided in paragraph 12 below, all students are eligible for the Work Experience Program with the enrollment determined by staff availability with priority given to those students with a specific special need, as approved by the grade level PRINCIPAL. If enrollment is limited due to the availability of resources, order or priority will be to students with:
- Credit deficiency;
- Partial self support;
- Difficulty in adjusting to a normal class program;
- Other students.
- No more than two (2) of the credits required for graduation from senior high school may be work experience credits.
- A pupil must have reached her/his sixteenth birthday at the start of the semester.
- A pupil will not be excused from scheduled classes in order to work.
- School work must be maintained at an acceptable level. If the school work should fall below the acceptable level, the pupil may be taken off the Work Experience Program.
- A pupil must be employed at least 16 out of the 18 weeks of the school semester and average 10 hours of employment per week, or a total of 180 hours for the semester. Employment must not exceed 30 hours per week.
- Work experience credit will not apply to early graduation unless the school offers an upgraded occupational skill development program as developed by qualified staff and approved by the Principal.
- A pupil who is between 16 and 18 years of age must obtain a work permit (except where a permit is not required by law) before being officially admitted to the program.
- The school will grant credit for employment in acceptable jobs as recommended by current Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations guidelines.
- A pupil is not to change from one job to another without the approval of her/his PRINCIPAL and/or designated person in each school, and s/he is to notify her/his PRINCIPAL and/or the designated person in each school immediately when s/he quits a job or is released from a job.
- Any student who does not meet the total program requirements (job and school) will not receive work experience credit.
- Students who are either enrolled in the District's alternative programs, have Individual Educational Plans (IEP) or are in (work) apprenticeship programs shall follow the guidelines established by the programs or the student's IEP.
