PROCEDURECURRICULUM 3151
Instruction

Auto Mechanics Programs

Type of work permitted:

  1. Automotive service includes most phases of automotive maintenance and repairs.
  2. No individual will be permitted to work alone in the shop. Any student may have permission and the instructor must be present.
  3. Auto mechanics teachers need time in the shop to gain experience on equipment and to perform maintenance duties when they feel the necessity. This service and experimentation must be performed when an extended period of time is available without interruption, and when there are no students present. This is especially true when establishing a new program or shop facility.

Proper instruction cannot be conducted unless the teacher has become proficient in the use of the equipment. Therefore, the facility and a key for the garage door should be made available for the auto mechanics teacher's use during Saturday, vacation, etc., when extended hours for work are available. Of course, a building permit should be secured in advance when the school building is normally closed as per Board of Education regulations. An exception may be made with the building principal's permission if emergency repairs are necessary and cannot be completed during the regular hours.

Operations:

  1. Services offered from these facilities will be available to auto mechanics students and school employees.
  2. All proposed student work must fit into the total instructional program.
  3. All major services must be scheduled at least one day in advance.
  4. Autos must be removed from the facility by 4:30 p.m. unless prior arrangements are made.
  5. Vehicles left overnight or over the weekend must be parked inside the facility or within a properly fenced and locked area.
  6. Vehicles will be serviced by students only on school days.
  7. All customers must sign the service agreement before any work can begin.
  8. Vehicles brought in for instructional repairs are covered by a BOARD comprehensive liability garage insurance against defective workmanship, vandalism, or damage caused to the vehicle while in the school shop.

Financing:

  1. The recipient of services performed will pay only for materials used. However, the recipient may supply materials secured from other sources if appropriate.
  2. Payment received should be turned into the school office promptly to be deposited in Object #409 or in a school auto mechanics account.
  3. All basic stock supplies are to be requisitioned from Object #412. Special emergency automotive parts are ordered from automotive suppliers as needed and paid for once a month from the school auto mechanics account.
  4. Monies collected must cover monies spent from both accounts. No sales tax need be collected by shop teachers, as directed by the Wisconsin Tax Department.
  5. A record of all major transactions will be maintained by the instructor on the work order form.
  6. The school auto mechanics fund will be closed out at the end of the school year and transferred to Object #409.
  7. The BOARD does not approve the purchase and titling of vehicles by any department for instructional purposes and resale.
