Independent Study
The Madison Metropolitan School District provides opportunities for high school
students to engage in independent study. Such study extends educational
opportunities beyond that which the high school provides. Successfully completed
independent study will be granted academic credit.

Independent Study
- All independent study must be initiated and completed through an independent
study contract approved by the PRINCIPAL.
- Each independent study contract must be sponsored, monitored and verified by a
certified staff member. (See number 7, below.)
- No grades for independent studies will be given. Pass or fail will determine
credits granted.
- Credit requirements:
- No more than 1 credit per school year may be granted.
- No more than 1 credit may be granted in the same subject area.
- No more than 2 credits may be applied to the total graduation
requirement.
- Credits will be granted as follows:
45 hours - 1/4 credit (equal to 2 1/2 periods per week for 1 semester);
90 hours - 1/2 credit (equal to 5 periods per week for 1 semester);
180 hours - 1 credit (equal to 5 periods per week for 1 year).
- Any and all costs evolving from independent study will be the responsibility of the
student. The Madison Metropolitan School District will expend no funds for the
independent study of individual students.
- Recognition for independent study related to service or activities not meeting
these general guidelines may be allowed with the approval of the PRINCIPAL.
Academic credit for such service or activities will be determined by the
PRINCIPAL.
- Physical education independent study contracts have been developed to be
congruent with the physical education proficiency-based program. These
contracts will be initiated and completed through the Physical Education
Department Chairperson.
- Individual school should develop contracts and procedures for implementing the
independent study program.
