| POLICY | EXCUSED FROM COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IN A SCHOOL IN THE MMSD | 4042

It is the POLICY of the BOARD to encourage each student to continue in school until
s/he graduates or receives the equivalency of a high school diploma. Following every
effort to provide such opportunity, the BOARD may excuse the student from attendance
in the Madison Metropolitan School District upon the following circumstances (1) upon
the child's request and with written approval of the child's parents or guardian, any child
who is 16 years of age or over and a child at risk, may attend, in lieu of high school or
on a part-time basis, a technical college if the child and his or her parent or guardian
agree in writing, that the child will participate in a program leading to the child's high
school graduation and (2) upon the child's request and with the written approval of the
child's parent or guardian, any child who is 17 years of age or over may be excused
from regular school attendance if the child and his or her parent or guardian agree in
writing, that the child will participate in a program or curriculum modification leading to
the child's high school graduation or leading to a Certificate of General Development
(GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HS ED).

- A student who is enrolled in the Madison Metropolitan School District and her/his
parent/guardian who desire to request that the BOARD approve the student's
placement in a non-Madison Metropolitan School District alternative educational
program under this policy must fill out and sign the "Madison Metropolitan School
District Contract for Services Agreement" (hereinafter the Agreement) to Enroll in
a Program Leading to a Certificate of General Development (GED) or a High
School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). The student or her/his parent/guardian
must also have a representative from the non-Madison alternative program
approve the request and sign the Agreement. After the Agreement has been
completely filled out and signed, it must be submitted to the PRINCIPAL or
her/his designee of the student's home school.
- The PRINCIPAL or designee shall review the request and recommend approval
or disapproval of the request to the DIRECTOR OF ALTERNATIVE
PROGRAMS.
- The DIRECTOR OF ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS, in consultation with other
appropriate District officials shall review the request and may make a
recommendation to the BOARD.
- If the BOARD approves a request, the DIRECTOR OF ALTERNATIVE
PROGRAMS shall submit such information to the appropriate PRINCIPAL
and/or his/her designee.

- The Agreement shall be signed by the student, her/his parent or guardian,
and a representative of the non-Madison alternative program prior to the
student's admission into the program.
- The Agreement shall include but not be limited to a statement that the
student shall attend the program; the services to be provided; the time
period needed to complete the program leading to a diploma or its
equivalent; how the program will be monitored by a representative of the
District at least one time per semester, the cost of the program per
semester and how such cost will be paid by the District; that during a
school semester, a student shall not be allowed to transfer from one non-
Madison alternative program to another non-Madison alternative program
except under unusual circumstances; that if the BOARD or its designee
determines that a student is not complying with the terms of the
Agreement, the BOARD or its designee shall notify the student, her/his
parent or guardian, and the representative of the program that the
Agreement may be modified or suspended in 30 days; and that if the
Agreement is suspended, the student shall attend school in the Madison
Metropolitan School District in accordance with state law and BOARD
policy.
- If the student will be attending a Vocational, Technical and Adult
Education (VTAE) school, there shall also be included in the Agreement
the courses offered at the VTAE that have been approved by the State
Superintendent and the Madison School District as being courses for
which credit will be given to meet Madison School District high school
graduation requirements.
