PROCEDURE
SUSPENSION
4043
Pupils
Suspension
A pupil shall be advised of the reason for her/his proposed suspension and be
given the opportunity to explain her/his version of the incident.
A pupil may be suspended if it is determined that s/he is guilty of non-compliance
with written rules of conduct which includes endangering the property, health, or
safety of others and that her/his suspension is reasonably justified for any other
reason .
A first offense by a pupil which necessitates disciplinary action should be
resolved, if possible, by action other than suspension.
When a pupil is suspended:
The parent or guardian of a suspended minor pupil shall be given prompt
notice of the suspension and the reason therefor.
The PRINCIPAL shall immediately contact the parents or guardian
by telephone, if possible, and notify them of her/his decision to
suspend the pupil.
The PRINCIPAL shall keep the suspended pupil until the end of the
day unless arrangements can be made with the parents or
guardian to take custody of the pupil prior to the end of the day.
The PRINCIPAL shall notify the parents or guardian in writing by
plain envelope, U.S. mail, of the facts of the suspension. The
notice shall specify the beginning and ending times of the
suspension, the necessity for a parent-principal conference, and
the procedures for arranging such conference. The notification to
the parent or guardian should also indicate that a pupil or her/his
parent or guardian may, within five (5) school days following
commencement of the suspension, have a conference with the
SUPERINTENDENT or SUPERINTENDENT'S designee, who shall
be someone other than a principal, administrator, or teacher in the
suspended pupil's school.
The PRINCIPAL shall send a copy of the notification letter to the
REGISTRAR and to the appropriate ASSISTANT
SUPERINTENDENT and place a copy of the notification letter in
the pupil's record.
If the parent requests a conference with the SUPERINTENDENT or
SUPERINTENDENT's designee, and after such conference the
SUPERINTENDENT or SUPERINTENDENT's designee finds that the pupil was
suspended unfairly or unjustly, or that the suspension was inappropriate in the
nature of the alleged offense, or that the pupil suffered undue consequences or
penalties as a result of the suspension, reference to the suspension shall be
expunged from the pupil's school record.
The finding shall be made within fifteen (15) school days of said
conference.
A pupil suspended shall not be denied the opportunity to take any examination
missed during the suspension period. Course work missed during the period of
suspension may be made up through a student's own initiative.
The suspension may be terminated by the PRINCIPAL within the five-day period.
A pupil shall not be suspended for consecutive five-day periods for one offense.
After a second or third suspension, the parents or guardian may be informed in
writing that repeated suspension may lead to the pupil's expulsion. The
notification letter shall be forwarded to the appropriate AREA
SUPERINTENDENT and REGISTRAR of the Madison Metropolitan School
District.
The PRINCIPAL shall notify the REGISTRAR of all suspensions of students from
school.
Each semester the REGISTRAR shall prepare a suspension report of all
students suspended in the District.
The REGISTRAR shall forward the suspension reports to the APPROPRIATE
ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT(S).
