Diagnosis and Treatment
- Diagnosis and treatment will be performed by an APNP by either
recommending over-the-counter medication or prescribing appropriate
medication. Treatment protocols will be signed by the District medical
consultant. Written parental permission must also be obtained prior to
any treatment. Only School Nurses who hold current valid licenses as
APNPs in the State of Wisconsin per Chapter 441 of Wisconsin Statutes
and N8 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code will diagnose and/or
prescribe medications under this section.
- APNPs may diagnose the following acute health problems: conjunctivitis
(pinkeye), impetigo (skin infection), minor localized skin infection, otitis
externa (swimmer's ear), otitis media middle ear infection), head lice,
scabies (skin infestation), streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat), and
tinea corporis (ringworm of body).
- APNPs may offer treatment of the acute illnesses as listed above and are
permitted to prescribe medication (both prescription and non-prescription)
for the above conditions.
- The APNPs may only prescribe medications according to directions
written by District APNPs and approved by the District Medical Consultant.
- After making a diagnosis of a condition as described above, treating
and/or prescribing medication, in order to administer the medication, the
APNPs will follow those procedures outlined in Policy 4113, items 1(a)
through 8.
