Annual Notification of Rights

The Madison Metropolitan School District will annually notify parents and eligible students of their rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Wisconsin Statute Section 118.125 and School Board Student Records Policy.

Annual Notification of Rights

  1. Within the first three weeks of each school year, the Madison Metropolitan School District will notify parents and eligible students of their rights under this Policy.
    1. The District will publish a Class 1 notice in the official school newspapers.
    2. A bulletin listing these rights will be provided to each student.
  2. The bulletin listing these rights will be provided to parents and eligible students when the student enrolls during the school year.
  3. The notice will include the following:
    1. The right of a student's parents and eligible student to inspect and review the student's educational records (Policy 4153);
    2. The intent of the Madison Metropolitan School District to limit the disclosure of information contained in a student's educational records (Policy 4157);
    3. The right of a student's parents or an eligible student to seek to correct parts of the student's education record which s/he believes to be inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of student rights (Policy 4159);
    4. A statement that the District's policy on student records may be reviewed at the PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE, located in the Central Administration Building, or in the school office at the individual schools. (Policy 4161);
    5. A statement of costs to be assessed for copying student records (Policy 4154);
    6. The right of any person to file a complaint with the Department of Education if it is believed that the Madison Metropolitan School District violates the FERPA (Policy 4161);
    7. A declaration of the personally identifiable information to be considered by the District to be directory information (Policy 4156).
  4. If necessary, the District will arrange to provide translations of this notice to non-English speaking parents or eligible students in their native language.
