Communicable Disease
The Madison Metropolitan School District shall follow federal regulations, state statutes, administrative rules, city ordinances, and the procedures required by the Health Services Guidelines for communicable diseases. The Health Services Guidelines are approved by the Madison Metropolitan School District medical advisor.
While participating in school-related activities or while on school premises, no student shall refuse to interact or work with other students or staff because they have (or may have) a communicable disease if the communicable disease does not pose a significant health risk to others. The determination of whether a communicable disease poses a significant health risk to others shall be made by the District's Health Services Coordinator (hereinafter the "Health Services Coordinator") or the Coordinator's designee in accordance with the Health Services Guidelines. Said determination shall be based solely upon the available medical evidence.
No employee shall refuse to perform her/his duties or refuse to work with, or provide services to students or staff because they have (or may have) a communicable disease if the communicable disease does not pose a significant health risk to others. The determination of whether a communicable disease poses a significant health risk to others shall be made by the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee in accordance with the Health Services Guidelines. Said determination shall be based solely upon the available medical evidence.

Students who have a communicable disease as defined by the Health Services Guidelines or HSS Administrative Rule 145 that may expose others to significant risk while they are on school premises or engaged in school-related activities shall be excused from school and from attending such activities until such time as their presence will not expose others to infections.
The determination as to whether or under what circumstances a student with a communicable disease poses a significant health risk to others in the school setting or in school-related activities shall be made by the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee in accordance with the Health Services Guidelines. Said determination shall be based solely upon the available medical evidence.
Should the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee make the determination that a student poses a significant health risk to others in the school environment, the Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee shall notify the parent or guardian that the student may not participate in school activities or remain on school premises.
District employees who have a communicable disease, as defined by the Health Services Guidelines or HSS Administrative Rule 145 that may expose others to significant risk while they perform their duties, will be excused from work until they no longer pose a significant health risk.
The determination as to whether or under what circumstances an employee with a communicable disease poses a significant health risk to others in the school setting or in school related activities shall be made by the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee on the recommendation of the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee in accordance with the Health Services Guidelines. Said determination shall be based solely upon the available medical evidence.
Should the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee on recommendation of the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee determine that an employee poses a significant health risk to others in the school environment, the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee shall notify the employee, in writing, that s/he shall not participate in school related activities or be present on school premises until s/he no longer poses a significant health risk to others.
Students who may be exposed to a significant health risk because of personal health problems which have been brought to the attention of health services staff may be excused by the District until such time as they are no longer exposed to a significant health risk.
The determination as to whether or not the student (with the personal health problem) is exposed to a significant health risk shall be made by the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee upon the recommendation of the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee in accordance with the Health Services Guidelines. Said determination shall be based solely upon the available medical evidence.
Should the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee on recommendation of the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee determine that the student (with the personal health problem) is exposed to a significant health risk, the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee shall notify the parent or guardian of the student, in writing, that the student does not have to participate in school-related activities or be present on school premises until the student is no longer exposed to the significant health risk.
District employees who provide services or perform duties that expose them to a significant health risk may be excused by the District from providing such service or performing such duties until such time as they are no longer exposed to a significant health risk. During the time period in which the employee has been excused, the employee will be reassigned to other duties.
The determination as to whether or under what circumstances the provision of services or the performance of duties poses a significant health risk to an employee shall be made by the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee upon the recommendation of the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee in accordance with the Health Services Guidelines. Said determination shall be based solely upon the available medical evidence. If a District employee has a personal health problem which she or he believes should be a consideration in the decision to exclude under this section, the employee must inform the District Health Services Staff of her/his personal health problem.
Should the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee on recommendation of the Health Services Coordinator or the Coordinator's designee determine that the provision of services or the performance of duties poses a significant health risk to an employee, the SUPERINTENDENT or the SUPERINTENDENT'S designee may excuse the employee from providing such service or performing such duties. During the time period in which the employee has been excused, the employee will be reassigned to other duties.
