Absence Required by Pregnancy and Maternity Leave
- Pregnancy will be treated as any other temporary medical disability in
accordance with the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, and
Subchapter II, Chapter III, Wisconsin Statutes. Thus, an employee may, with
her doctor's consent, teach as long as she is physically and emotionally capable
of performing her professional duties. An employee is expected to return to her
professional duties when medically capable of returning, unless a leave has
been granted pursuant to the following paragraphs. However, it is not the intent
of this section to provide benefits different from or in excess of valid guidelines
or regulations established pursuant to said laws, except for employees who have
been employed by the Madison BOARD in excess of three years.
- The employee shall notify her supervisor immediately when pregnancy has been
established, and she shall present a statement from a physician as to the
anticipated date of birth.
- A request for a maternity leave of absence is made in writing to the DIRECTOR
of HUMAN RESOURCES or his/her designee for approval; a disapproved request may be
appealed to the SUPERINTENDENT and/or the BOARD.
