Methodology

The 2001 Climate Survey continued the use of a locally designed questionnaire that sought to provide the greatest degree of flexibility and value for individual schools. The survey was administered to three stakeholder groups: students, parents, and instructional staff. Based on feedback from school personnel and to better address the specific needs of schools, the student survey was modified so that separate versions could be used with elementary students and middle/high school students.

This year's survey included the following populations:

The survey was designed as a computer scannable form again this year in order to reduce data entry time and coding errors. The surveys were administered immediately following spring break. Staff and students were asked to complete surveys during the regular school day, while parents were sent a copy of the survey via their youngest child.

A key goal in the data collection process this year was to improve response rates among traditionally under-represented groups. Two specific strategies were used. In the first instance, lists were generated containing the names of low-income households at each school. Family/community liaisons participated in a monitored follow-up effort to ensure that surveys were received at home by parents, and that the surveys were completed and returned to school.

The second strategy focused on improving response rates among non-English speaking parents. The LEP staff assisted in translating the surveys into four different languages: Spanish, Hmong, Khmer, and Lao. In addition, these staff also helped administer the Climate Survey in large group settings during late April.
