The Summer Food Service Program

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) fills the void of children's nutrition after school is over in June. The SFSP was established to ensure that children in needy areas would continue to receive nutritious meals during school vacation. Meals are comparable to those served under the national School Lunch and School Breakfast programs.

The Madison Metropolitan School District took over this program over 10 years ago. Although every year we have increased the numbers of needy children we serve, we still are not reaching every needy child in our community.

Beginning today and going through August 17 at most locations, free meals are provided to all children at SFSP sites, which are in areas with significant concentrations of low-income children.

Any child between the ages of 2 and 18 may receive up to two free meals per day through the SFSP. Persons 19 years and over who are determined by a state or local educational agency to have a mental or physical disability, and who participate during the school year in a public or private nonprofit school program, are also eligible.
