This page is dedicated to Nuwa Nnyanzi, the "Master of Batik", for the service he provided for our school with his Batik workshop. Also see our Cultural Connections Page on Nuwa and Batik
| Nuwa started painting in 1979 during a period of exhile from his home country of Uganda. Since then he has done many presentations around the world. His specialty is Batik painting which involves drawing origional designes on fabric, applying wax to specific areas, and then submergence in dye. Nnyanzi revolutionized the art by discovering a method where you can apply more than one color of dye at once, creating tones and shades never seen before. |
| A major part of his work, Nnyanzi's outlooks on human and cultural values reflect heavily in his art. Each piece is a different statement, all of them powerful. |
|
This piece is titled "No time to chat". It depicts a group of women throwing themselves into their work. Though Nnyanzi did not put detail on the faces, you can tell through contours and indentations that they are clearly smiling. It goes to show that you don't need eyes or mouths to express the attitude of a scene.
|
This piece is called "Tolerance". It represents a group of people that have clear cultural differences getting together without quarrel. It says to me that physical differences are petty, and we should all just party together with mutual tolerance.

These are a couple examples of Nnyanzi's work. On behalf
of Shabazz, we'd like to thank him for all of his time and effort he has
selflessly given us. To check out some of his other pieces, click on the
paintings to go to a couple of his own web sites.
