The Art of Batik

Shabazz hosted international artist Nuwa Nnyanzi during the month of October, 2003. While at Shabazz, Nuwa shared his experience of painting murals with the repatriated Ugandan youth that had been kidnapped and forced to fight for insurgent armies. After a series of discussions, the class voted amoung four themes for the mural. In the end, the students chose to paint about fear. First, they discussed and defined fear. They then defined and wrote about what they individually feared. Finally they wrote and discussed about what they can do about fear. Their first action was to paint the mural. Each student made sketches and then when they were ready they painted a representation of what they fear on the wall. The mural is both personal and public. Reactions by the public cover a variety of emotions. Some people have objected to the wall, and it got a very poor review in the capital times. They think it is negitive and depressing and object to the skill level of the artists. Others think the wall is great because it reflects what our society is living through at this time in history.
