| About the ECAP Program | ||
| ECAP stands for Equity
in Computer
Access Program. The goal of the program is to provide
people in the community an opportunity to access all of the benefits of
having a computer in their home, at no cost to them. It also provides
a place for community members to recycle computer equipment that is no
longer useful to them and still fairly able to function, thus preventing
some of it from ending up in a landfill.
ECAP Program is a class, giving Shabazz students a chance to learn technically what goes on inside a computer and maintenance of (both hardware and software) a computer. ECAP is a" ZERO BUDGET" class. We have no set funding for the class and service the class primarily through donations of equipment and software. Over 412 families have received
computers since January 2000. |
| The People behind ECAP | ||
The program was created by students who wanted to be in action and do something about the fact that not everyone has the priviledge of accesssing a computer. The fact that students and families without access infuriated Shabazz students as they began to realize the negative impact inherent in school and work situations imposed by lack of availability. Each year ECAP is made up of various students currently attending Shabazz and headed by the school's computer teacher, Tina Murray. The ECAP program is part of the curriculm at Malcolm Shabazz City HS, in Madison, WI. |
