Student Technology Leadership Project @ Malcolm Shabazz City High School

STLP

Students Mentoring Staff Project

STAFF CONTACT: Tina Murray

Students with interest and seeking further training in the area of technology team up to advance their skills. Areas of involvement cross a continuum of technology opportunities these can include "techie" type activities, software mastery, network operations, troubleshooting of systems and software, overall school system maintenance (sysop), network security, project leaders and staff person technology assistants and finally, formal teaching of technology to staff and students.

Each student becomes a mentor/trainer/teacher to staff and students and provides learning opportunities for the rest of our school community. These students are viewed as the "technology guru's" of our community and advance the use and standards of technology use here at Malcolm Shabazz.

Along with group projects and goals, each student is working on independent advancement of technological skills in various areas. Frequently where a student enters the program is a completely different place then they leave it. One form of technology melds into another leading students on a technological adventure.

Through this program technological skills will advance and offer students opportunities to hone their leadership skills. There will be many opportunities to become leaders, lead projects, offer assistance, become experts and take the skills learned in class beyond the classroom.

STLP was originally formed in January of 1997. It was a joint effort between our districts Management Information Services and interested high schools in the Madison school district. Statewide there were 16 schools participating in the project. Each school created a form of the program that suited their needs, resources available and educational objectives. As a result each school ended up creating a unique program all under the umbrella of Student Technology Leadership. In each of the schools the students participating in the program became technology leaders within their schools. Original funding for this project is long gone and each school is currently trying to maintain their programs with internal resources. This limits the programs possibilities somewhat and as a result the organizational structure of the statewide project has been compromised; it is very difficult to organize outcomes and activities with other schools across the state.

The WI model is a take off of one already functioning in Kentucky. In the summer of '97 each of five WI STLP school district sent two students and a staff member to a Kentucky Technology summer camp to learn more about how they have succeeded and the challenges they face. The five teams brought that information back to WI and integrated into our WI STLP program structure. From it a manual was created with information, procedures, contact names and project summaries.

Here at Shabazz our program has thrived because we have made it a part of our curriculum AND been able to incorporate it as a Service Learning. We have had to be very creative in finding resources, however, our program has been successful as is evident in our being showcased in the WI State Journal Paper reaching across the state, local television news spots and now tentatively scheduled to air on PBS in May of '99.
