Marketing Education

Definition

Marketing is the coordinated system of business activities designed to provide products, and service, and ideas that satisfy customers.

Purpose

The purpose of secondary marketing is to develop a competent work force for marketing occupations through courses that provide students with necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes. Marketing consists of nine basic functions: buying, pricing, selling, distribution, promotion, product/service planning, financing, risk management, and securing marketing information. The Marketing program is designed to assist students in understanding the wide range of social and economic responsibilities that a business must follow.

Characteristics

  1. Marketing is a cooperative venture between the high school, the business community, students, and parents.
  2. Marketing is considered an integral part of the high school's educational program, with direction and counsel coming from business partnerships.
  3. Marketing teachers possess business experience to provide students with real world applications.
  4. Instruction stresses application to, and direct involvement with, a variety of businesses.
  5. A range of instruction covers development of functional skills, career competencies, management, and entrepreneurship.
  6. Instruction is offered to students in many marketing settings in the community. The Marketing program provides adaptations for multicultural populations within the school, classroom, and the curriculum.

A Marketing student is a 9th-12th grader who is enrolled in, or has completed at least one or more Marketing courses. The student has a general, career interest in Marketing, or a related field. This student may seek employment or post-secondary education after high school.
