Angola
http://www.angola.org/

This site is extremely helpful for doing a project or just learning about Angola. It provides reliable information from the Embassy of the Republic of Angola. It is updated daily with current news stories and also gives a lot of cultural facts. There is information on many sports such as basketball, handball, and sailing. You can also find simple recipes. One thing that the site could improve on is the lack of pictures available. Overall, this site was extremely smooth and not confusing. It should be visited by all interested in Angola.

Burundi Page
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/African_Studies/Country_Specific
/Burundi.html

The Burundi Page is a terrific site for finding any kind of information about Burundi. However, this page lacks interesting visual content. They make up for it with a fast page load and a boatload of information. Overall, this is a great site and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Burundi.

IRIN (United Nations Integrated Regional Information Networks)
http://www.irinnews.org/

The site I chose to evaluate is IRIN. It is created by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid. It led me to information about starvation in Mauritania. I like it because it had great links to other African news stories, maps, and a whole lot of useful information about my topic. The particular report I used (www.irinews.org/report.asp?report ID=30168) had information on drought near the bottom of the page, which I ignored at first, but then as I read on I found that drought is the lead cause of starvation in Mauritania. This site helped me realize that. That's why I think you should look at this web site for information on emergency situations in Mauritania and other African countries.

Kenya
http://kenya.com/

Kenya.com is a site to visit to find out what is happening in Kenya. It has up-to-the-minute facts on current events. The site is extremely easy to use; just click on the "news" icon. When you have clicked on this icon you can access sports, economical, business, and tourist information. One thing that this site lacks is graphics, but it is still a great site to visit. So to find out about current events in Kenya, go to kenya.com.

Kingdom of Morocco
http://www.mincom.gov.ma/

Do you want to find rare Moroccan recipes? Are you thinking of visiting Morocco? Do you just want to find general information about Morocco? Then this is the site for you! Colorful, authentic pictures on people, places, and even clothing are interesting and fun to look at. The many links are helpful and informative. Try the "Moroccan Women" page for information on beauty from head to foot. The "Photo Gallery" is intriguing with photos on landscapes, clothes, animals, plants, and traditions. Search for everything possible on cities and regions. Links are updated regularly. This site is sponsored by the Ministry of Communications. "The Kingdom of Morocco" is a must-go! Just sit back and surf!

The Living Africa (Thinkquest)
http://library.thinkquest.org/16645/

The title describes very accurately what this site is all about. It is aweb site that includes nature facts, pictures, and information on all the countries in Africa. You can explore information in four main categories: the people, the land, wildlife, and national parks. You can find information on most of the religions and ethnic groups in Africa in the people section. In the land chapter you can learn about the main physical features from the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert. A page or more of information and statistics is listed for bovids, herbivores, carnivores, and primates. There is information on every national park on the whole continent! The Wildlife Conservation Challenge is my favorite link in the whole site. It challenges you, the player, to try to save the environment. You can even go on a safari and send virtual postcards to your friends. Watch the informative videos that are available to you. After that, challenge yourself to the quizzes about the African people, land and wildlife. The amazing thing about this virtual library is that three kids, ages 17-18, made this five star site and they don't even live on the same continent! This is a one-stop-project-helper for sure!

Overpopulation: What Does it Mean?
http://www.duke.edu/~ac23/Africa/

This is one of the best sites to find issues and information about Africa's overpopulation problem. It was created by a group of graduate students at Duke University. It has detailed information in a reasonable amount of space. It lacks visuals, but is very well-organized. The "Implications" page has headings listing the problems caused by overpopulation, like deforestation, food and water shortages, migration, and spread of disease. The information is easy to read and we would recommend it to anybody who wants to find out about overpopulation issues in Africa.

Internet Detectives is a publication produced by Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) middle school students as a resource for other K-12 students. It is an ongoing, cooperative effort of middle school Social Studies classrooms. Students find, evaluate and recommend Internet resources related to the curriculum. This project is supported by MMSD's Teaching and Learning Department and Library Media Services.

These Internet resources were evaluated on the basis of Site Selection Guidelines. Questions and comments regarding specific sites can be sent to the classroom teachers listed with the student author and school.

Questions or comments regarding the Internet Detectives project can be sent to Barb Spitz at bspitz@madison.k12.wi.us or (608) 663-1976.
