Lesson Plan
Purpose:
- To read books by various authors
- To read for enjoyment
- To offer a succinct description of a book
- To design an illustration to represent a book
Step by Step…
| Step 1 |

|
Read several books by different authors.
Which ones have they heard? Which are their favorites? Which one would
they like to hear? What do they already know about the book before
they being reading? (Notice the pictures. What can they tell about
the story by looking at the pictures?
|
| Step 2 |
Ask the students to choose a book that they
might like to hear more than once. It is helpful to avoid using the
word "favorite" as students sometimes cannot move beyond
trying to single out one book.
|
| Step 3 |
Explain to the students that they are
going to give some of these books awards by giving them a blue ribbon.
|
| Step 4 |
Using a graphics program such as KidPix
have the students draw an oval. Next have them copy and paste the
oval so that they have two. In one of the circles they should draw
a picture that represents their book. It could be a character or a
scene from the book.. In the second circle they should write the name
of the book and a sentence telling why they liked the book. In kindergarten
or first grade this may need to be dictated to the teacher. Print
|
| Step 5 |
Give the students a sheet of yellow construction
paper with an award symbol printed on. Have them cut this out.
|
| Step 6 |
Give the students a piece of wide blue
ribbon. This can be real ribbon or a piece of blue construction paper.
Have them glue the front circle on the front of their award. Then,
taking care to make sure the text is not upside down, glue first the
blue ribbon to the back and then the text These can now be hung in
a display case or from a wire to show your award winning books.
