Lesson Plan
Purpose:
- To learn further uses of text boxes and paint boxes
- To extend a literature source to create a classroom book
Step by Step…
| Step 1 |
 |
Read the book The Secret Truth About
Grown-ups by David Wisniewski.
|
| Step 2 |
Discuss with students other rules grown-ups have (use
home rules as well as school rules) and write input on the board.
|
| Step 3 |
Show students an example of what they
will be making. Highlight the formatting details: where items are
in bold, caps, and where they are indented.
|
| Step 4 |
Have students open a blank
page and make a text box in the bottom half of the page.
|
| Step 5 |
Have them make three headings, in bold
and all caps.
|
| Step 6 |
|
Have students go back and fill in the
information, remembering to switch off the Bold and Caps Lock and
to make sure this part is indented (remember that the TRUTH section
is just a teaser, and the "juicy" section is saved for the
page two).
|
| Step 7 |
|
After all parts are filled in, have them
change the font and size so that it uses up the entire bottom part
of the page.
|
| Step 8 |
|
Now have students use the paint tool to
make a paint box and create an illustration for their rule (remind
them to be benign on this page and not let the secret out; we want
to entice the reader to turn the page).
|
| Step 9 |
|
Have students create a second page for
their document and make another text box in the bottom half of the
page.
|
| Step 10 |
|
In this text box they can finish off the
TRUTH in large bold letters. They can then click Return a few times
and explain the TRUTH in detail (like the book) in smaller, non-bolded
text.
|
| Step 11 |
|
Create a paint box and have the students
illustrate their TRUTH.

Example of Finished Project

GROWN-UP RULE #59:
Don't eat snow.
OFFICIAL REASON
It's dirty and bad for you.
THE TRUTH:
Yes, snow on the ground is dirty and therefore
not a good thing to put in your body, but the REAL reason is...
|
...the snow might come back
and eat YOU!
Through centuries of negotiations between humans
and snow, we have finally made a pact with snow creatures and the
like not to devour each other. Occasionally, a child here and there
has been known to eat snow, but there have always been consequesnces...
You may have hear of children in tragic great sledding accidents,
or snow tunnels that collapse... Just a cover-up. In fact, those
are children that have fallen victim to the vengeful snow.
