Supporting the Math Standards (Ages 3-5)

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) rewrote the national standards in mathematics to include PreK in 2000. The inclusion of PreK confirms the importance and value of mathematics instruction for young children. NCTM has identified the five content standards below, as well as five process standards – Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Representation and Connections – that weave through the content standards.

*NCTM has identified Number and Operations, Geometry and Measurement as the most important standards for creating a strong foundation in mathematics for children ages 3-6.
