Grade Level Performance Standards: Kindergarten: Health Information and Services

Students will understand and be able to:

Identify sources of help in school and community if she/he, a friend, or a family member were exposed to dangerous substances.

Identify the symbols for poisons.

Given a situation, identify healthy and unhealthy choices.

These Grade Level Performance Standards are listed in a developmental sequence. However, because each school is organized in a slightly different manner, a specific grade level standard may not be addressed at the grade indicated, but will be addressed within the three year time span.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade One: Health Information and Services

Students will understand and be able to:

Identify what safety helpers to contact for different problems.

Demonstrate when and how to use 911.

Identify harmful household products.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade Two: Health Information and Services

Students will understand and be able to:

Identify sources of health information (e.g. pamphlets, magazine, newspaper...).

Explain the roles of safety personnel (e.g. crossing guards, police officers, EMTs and firefighters).

Tell how a commercial influences purchase of health related products and services.

Students will understand and be able to:

List people who help a community be healthy.

List places where health information is available.

List information needed to place an accurate and efficient call to 911

Students will understand and be able to:

Identify specific places in the community from which to seek health care or health enhancing activities.

Identify health related products advertised on TV (or through other media) and explain who in the media are trying to influence.

Students will understand and be able to:

Generate a convincing argument that nutritional value of foods should be a factor when making personal food choices.

Discuss his/her role in helping community efforts to prevent and control disease, protect natural resources, reduce injuries and prevent pollution through services, regulations and laws.

Explain the value of assertive strategies when asking for help in an emergency.

Differentiate between how heredity factors and communicable diseases affect adolescent development.

Identify school services for physical and mental health concerns.

Students will understand and be able to:

Draw conclusions from a variety of resources about health products and services.

Identify the relationship of cost and effectiveness of health products.

Identify situations that require professional health services.

Identify community mental and physical health services and how to access them.

Identify myths, misinformation and stereotyping promoted in the media.

Describe the effects of teratogens (toxins) on the developing fetus.

Debate legal issues related to AODA, dating violence, STIs, harassment.

Identify and evaluate resources that provide accurate health information in regard to the seven strands of health education.

Identify the factors that influence personal choices on healthy products based on current information.

Use resources to identify health care services advantageous for optimal health care.
