Fourth Grade Performance Standards: Culture, Media and Technology

Grade Level Performance Standards: Kindergarten: Culture, Media and Technology

Students will understand and be able to:

Identify various tools that the doctor uses in a checkup.

List favorite foods (e.g. pizza, tacos) and discuss the origins of each.

Identify health care resource persons such as the school nurse and nurse's assistant.

These Grade Level Performance Standards are listed in a developmental sequence. However, because each school is organized in a slightly different manner, a specific grade level standard may not be addressed at the grade indicated, but will be addressed within the three year time span.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade One: Culture, Media and Technology

Students will understand and be able to:

Describe family similarities and differences and how family structures change.

Understand that physical and gender differences need not dictate role expectations.

Understand the importance of regular exercise (play) in a world of increasing technology.

Cite examples of how television, computers and video games affect personal health.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade Two: Culture, Media and Technology

Students will understand and be able to:

Explain the relationship between where people live and the foods they eat.

Describe how immunizations and medicines help fight disease.

Recognize the ways news media, technology and other sources (e.g. music, magazine stories, classes) provide information about health.

Recognize that individuals have different cultural backgrounds that may impact health practices.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade Three: Culture, Media and Technology

Students will understand and be able to:

Analyze menus from fast food restaurants for nutritional value.

Identify what has been done to the school and school grounds to accommodate people with various kinds of challenges.

Explain how personal choices can reduce accidents.

Compare and contrast what advertisements infer about smoking with what they have learned in school about smoking.

Students will understand and be able to:

Analyze menus from culturally different restaurants for nutritional value.

Discuss examples of food advertising, identifying the purposes and the relationship to personal health.

List TV programs that exemplify healthy family relationships and explain their selection.

Explain why healthy human bodies can be various shapes and sizes.

Explain how humans depend on their natural and constructed environments and that new ideas and inventions continue to influence the environments.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade Five: Culture, Media and Technology

Students will understand and be able to:

Discuss the relationship between personal health behaviors and individual well being.

Explain how smoking and drinking as seen on TV and movies may influence a student's future behaviors.

Analyze the difference between school lunches and family meals.

Explain common eating disorders and how to prevent them.

Compare drugs that have been developed to benefit people with illegal drugs that harm people considering access, purpose, cost, affects on body, etc.

Explain the impact of peer harassment on physical and emotional health.

Identify and interpret the effect of media messages on health and nutrition.

Identify the effect of culture and media messages on dating relationships.

Students will understand and be able to:

Recognize cultural diversities and their influences on health behaviors (e.g. ATOD use).

Evaluate how media perspectives of health impact on personal, family and community health.

Explore technology (e.g. exercise equipment, virtual reality, computers, computerized equipment) and its influence on personal, family and community health.

Identify factors in the community (e.g. religion, values, habits, and budget) that influence health.
