MMSD Mathematics Content Standard for Algebra - Grade 7

Introduction | Grade 6 | Grade 7 | Grade 8

Achievement of the following grade-level standards supports achievement of Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.

By the end of seventh grade, students will...

Demonstrate understanding of patterns, relations, and functions by
(WMAS F.8.2, F.8.3)

  • representing, generalizing, and analyzing a variety of patterns with tables, words, graphs and symbolic rules;
  • relating and comparing different forms of representation for a relationship.

Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols (WMAS F.8.1, F.8.2) to

  • develop a conceptual understanding of different uses of variables;
  • develop appropriate symbolic representation skills, including the use of variables and exponents;
  • evaluate expressions through numerical substitution;
  • explore relationships between symbolic expressions and graphs;
  • solve contextualized problems.

Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships (WMAS F.8.2, F.8.4)

  • representing them with graphs, tables, and equations showing general trends;
  • writing them to represent contextualized problem situations and to express generalizations;
  • describing a real-world phenomenon that a given graph represents.

Solve linear equations informally and graphically (WMAS F.8.1, F.8.4, F.8.5) through use of

  • a coordinate system;
  • technology, especially graphing calculators, and methods without technology;
  • student generated reasoning.
