MMSD Mathematics Content Standard for Geometry - Grade 6

Introduction | Grade 6 | Grade 7 | Grade 8

Achievement of the following grade-level standards supports achievement of Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.

By the end of sixth grade, students will...

Analyze characteristics and properties of two-dimensional geometric shapes (WMAS C.8.1, C.8.2), including

  • identifying triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms;
  • naming, defining, and classifying two-dimensional figures by geometric attributes;
  • analyzing relationships between and among the angles, sides, side lengths, perimeters and areas of objects.

Specify locations and describe spatial relationships (WMAS C.8.2, C. 8.5) by

  • using, but not necessarily naming, the first quadrant of a rectangular coordinate system;
  • using terms such as parallel, perpendicular, intersecting, congruent, similar.

Apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations (WMAS C.8.4) to

  • describe the effect of one or more flips, turns, slides;
  • examine the congruency, similarity, and line symmetry and rotational symmetry of objects using transformations.

Apply visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling (WMAS C.8.1, C.8.2, C.8.3) to

  • draw and build geometric objects with specified properties, such as side lengths or angle measures, using common mathematical tools;
  • areas outside the mathematics classroom, such as art, science, and everyday life.
