Achievement of the following grade-level standards supports achievement of Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.

By the end of eighth grade, students will...

Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes (WMAS C.8.1, C.8.2), including

  • naming, defining and classifying any two-dimensional figures by geometric attributes;
  • naming and defining three-dimensional figures such as rectangular prisms and pyramids, cones, cylinders, and spheres;
  • analyzing relationships between and among the angles, sides, side lengths, perimeters, areas, and volumes of objects.

Specify locations and describe spatial relationships linking coordinate geometry with algebraic representations, including slopes (WMAS C.8.2, C. 8.5), by

  • using all four quadrants of the rectangular coordinate system;
  • using appropriate vocabulary for coordinate geometry;
  • representing and examining the properties of geometric shapes;
  • examining special characteristics of geometric shapes, including pairs of parallel sides.

Apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations on a coordinate system (WMAS C.8.4) to

  • describe the effect of one or more flips, turns, slides, and the effect of scaling of a two-dimensional figure;
  • examine the congruency, similarity, line symmetry and/or rotational symmetry of objects using transformation.

Apply visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling (WMAS C.8.1, C.8.2, C.8.3) to

  • draw and build geometric objects with specified properties using common mathematical and technological tools;
  • draw two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects and identify three-dimensional shapes from two-dimensional perspectives;
  • create geometric models to represent and explain numerical and algebraic relationships;
  • areas outside the mathematics classroom, such as art, science, and everyday life.
