Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement* (WMAS D.8.1, D.8.2)including
-
facts, principles, and techniques of both metric and customary systems of measurement, e.g., 12 inches = one foot; the metric system is based on 10; a paperclip has a mass of about one gram;
-
approximate comparisons between metric and customary units, e.g., a liter and a quart are about the same; a kilometer is about six-tenths of a mile;
-
selection and use of appropriate size and type of unit to measure angles, length, perimeter, area, distance, surface area, and volume;
-
knowledge that direct measurement produces approximate, not exact, measures;
-
knowledge that the use of smaller units produce more precise measures;
-
situations where objects are not directly or easily measurable, e.g., area of an irregular figure, distance, height, sampling for data analysis.
Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to direct measurements* (WMAS D.8.3) of

lengths to the nearest mm or ½, ¼, 1/8, and 1/16th of an inch, including mixed number measurements, e.g. 3 ½;

liquid capacity to the nearest milliliter;

angles to the nearest degree;

temperatures to the nearest degree Celsius or Farenheit;

elapsed time to the nearest second.

estimate measurements (including using common and informal benchmarks);

convert from one unit to another within the same system;

solve problems involving scale factors, using ratio and proportion;

develop and use formulas to determine perimeter and area of simple and complex shapes;

develop and use formulas to determine the surface area and volume of simple and complex objects;
-
solve simple problems involving rates and derived measurements for such attributes as population density and change.
