Overview

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Middle School Mathematics Standards Committee convened in the fall of 2002 and completed the current version of the standards document in January of 2004. The committee included thirteen classroom teachers who were selected by their middle schools to represent their buildings and two mathematics resource teachers. The task undertaken by this committee was to draft new mathematics standards that would align to both the 1998 Wisconsin Model Academic Standards (WMAS) and the 2000 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM). An additional major resource was the 2001 Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Planning Curriculum in Mathematics.

The Draft MMSD 6-8 Mathematics Standards 2004 document represents the collective vision of three groups of mathematics education professionals: the 6-8 teachers who served on the writing committee; the reviewers of the document who are professional educators at the middle school, high school, and university level; and the entire MMSD Mathematics Resource Teacher team.

This document is meant to be used as a guide for instruction, a guide for evaluating curriculum materials, a guide for assessment of students’ mathematical understanding, and a guide for communication to parents. The current document is a draft and should be considered a working document. Any questions about the document should be directed to the committee chair, Faye Hilgart, Middle School Mathematics Resource Teacher.

NOTE: Throughout the document, boldface type indicates new material or grade-level changes in a standard addressed at previous grade levels. Material in regular font indicates content receiving continued work and further integration from earlier grades.

Each set of MMSD Mathematics Content Standards begins with a summary of the WMAS and NCTM content standards. The summaries provide an explanation of the scope of mathematics that students should explore in each strand.
