Achievement of the following grade-level standards supports achievement of Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.

By the end of eighth grade, students will...

Formulate questions that can be addressed with data; and design, conduct, organize, and display the results of statistical investigations (WMAS E.8.1, E.8.2)

  • about a characteristic shared by two populations or different characteristics within one population;
  • by selecting, creating, and using appropriate graphical representations of data, including but not limited to scatter-plots, stem-and-leaf plots, circle graphs, and box plots;
  • using technology.

Select, use, and interpret appropriate statistical methods (including use of technology) for analyzing data (WMAS E.8.3, E.8.5) including

  • measures of central tendencies and spread including statistical outliers, and interquartile range;
  • the correspondence between data sets and their graphical representations, especially scatter-plots, stem-and-leaf plots, circle graphs, and box plots;
  • comparisons of several data sets to generate, test, and confirm/deny hypotheses.

Develop and evaluate inferences, and make conjectures and predictions that are based on data from a variety of sources, (WMAS E.8.4, E.8.6) including

  • development of convincing arguments;
  • checking for credibility of the source and possible sources of bias;
  • critiquing techniques of collection, organization, and presentation of data;
  • the effects of missing or incorrect data;
  • the effects of sample size and selection.

Understand and apply basic concepts of probability when conducting and designing experiments and simulations (WMAS E.8.7)

  • using a variety of strategies to identify possible outcomes;
  • to compute probabilities for compound events using technology where appropriate;
  • using appropriate terminology to describe experimental and theoretical probabilities, and independent and dependent events;
  • using a variety of strategies (e.g., combinations and permutations) to identify and analyze possible outcomes;
  • using proportionality to make and test conjectures;
  • to analyze and predict outcomes from experimental and theoretical probabilities.
