A physically educated student understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

High Performance Standards: Opportunities

  1. Has a positive self-concept about his/her role as a participant.
  2. Identifies several activities that he/she enjoys participating in.
  3. Feels competent and is willing to learn new activities.
  4. Enjoys watching good performance as an aesthetically rewarding experience.
  5. Realizes the importance of cooperation within competition.
  6. Pursures interests outside the required curriculum i.e. non required physical education courses, career opportunities.

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade Ten and Eleven: Opportunities

As a result of participating in a quality physical education program the student will be able to...

demonstrate a commitment to physical activity as an important part of his/her lifestyle

participate in several outdoor pursuits indigenous to the geographic area

appreciate and respect the natural environment while participating in physical activity

know the way in which personal characteristics, performance styles, and activity preferences will change over the course of one's life

recognize career opportunities in the fields of sport, education, medicine and industry that utilize the skills and knowledge developed through participation in the physical education program

identify training and educational requirements necessary for career employment

identify and use technology as it relates to physical activity, participation, and performance

select three lifelong physical leisure activities for which s/he would like to be most competent, and identify the skills, levels of fitness, rules and strategies that must be acquired to gain proficiency in each activity

Grade Level Performance Standards: Grade Nine: Opportunities

As a result of participating in a quality physical education program the student will be able to...

identify personal feelings resulting from participation in physical activity

identify participation factors that contribute to enjoyment and self-expression

enjoy meeting and cooperating with others during physical activity

participate on a regular basis in at least one out-of-class activity

demonstrate an appreciation of the role of a spectator with the ability to understand and evaluate performance.

identify and use technology as it relates to physical activity, participation, and performance

Middle Performance Standards: Opportunities

  1. Identifies the type of activities he/she finds enjoyable and pursues these outside of physical education.
  2. Associates and expresses positive feelings about participation in physical activity.
  3. Is willing to try new and/or challenging activities.
  4. Aesthetically appreciates skilled movement of the body in at least one form.
  5. Knows the importance of communicating in dual and team sports.
  6. Searches for success.

As a result of participating in a quality physical education program the student will be able to...

continue to explore a variety of physical activities that have the potential for personal pleasure and enjoyment

understand how a commitment to a wellness plan enhances the quality of life

feel satisfaction on days when s/he engages in physical activity

feel satisfaction in the aesthetics and creative aspects of performance

show a desire to improve ones physical ability and performance

know the importance of communicating in dual and team sports.

As a result of participating in a quality physical education program the student will be able to...

identify opportunities in the school and community for regular participation in physical activity

identify the affective and social benefits resulting from participation in different forms of physical activities

describe ways to use the body and movement activities to communicate ideas and feelings

appreciate the personal challenge inherant in competition and their opponents contribution to that challenge

identify and use physical activity as a means of self-expression

identify groups or organization that can help in providing successful experiences in a variety of physical activities

aesthetically appreciate skilled movement of the body in at least one form.

As a result of participating in a quality physical education program the student will be able to...

identify forms of physical activity that provide personal enjoyment

choose to exercise at home for personal enjoyment and benefit

participate in games, sports, dance and outdoor putsuits, both in and outside of school, based on indiviudal interests and capabilities

recognize the aesthetic and creative aspects of performance

communicate with teammates and opponent about the positive and negative aspects of a game to help improve its outcome

identify a variety of physical activities that will provide satisfaction and lead to continued participation

Intermediate Performance Standards: Opportunities

  1. Demonstrates joy/pleasure from participating in physical activities both in and outside of school.
  2. Communicates and works with others to achieve goals during physical activity.
  3. Recognizes and appreciates skilled performance in a variety of activities.
  4. Recognizes and expresses feelings associated with success and failure appropriately.
  5. Uses movement as a medium of expression.
  6. Sets goals to improve performance.

demonstrate humility and grace as a winner in a competitive situation

praise opponents for a well-played game

show willingness to accept both offensive and defensive roles in a game situation

recognize the strengths and skill of the losing team

give useful feedback to a partner/teammate

use movement as a medium of expression.

create a dance sequence for the purpose of communication

accept challenges and increase risk-taking for the purpose of improving own skill level

accept and use feedback from teacher/peers to improve peformance

modify a practice situation or game to accommodate individual differences to assure success within the group

enjoy the role of spectator at a sports/gymnastics/dance event

log participation in a physical activity outside of class

As a result of participating in a quality physical education program the student will be able to...

enjoy and evaluate a peer performance

occasionally choose a more highly skilled partner with whom to practice in order to challenge own skill development

begin to accept the outcome of a competitive event with grace and humility

report on physical activities enjoyed outside of class with friends/family

choose an appropriate cooperative strategy in a given situation to achieve a group goal

adopt appropriate cooperative strategies in various situations to achieve group goals

use movement as a medium of expression.

  1. Willingly participates in and enjoys a variety of physical activities.

begin adapting skills more readily to new activities/games

begin to identify elements of his/her own movement skill that are improving

show enjoyment of movement by willingly choosing at least one physical activity outside of school

quickly and willingly form working partners/groups in class

show appreciation for skillful performance using objective criteria

avoid "put-downs" when evaluating the performance of others

begin to enjoy simple competition for its own sake, regardless of win/loss

create a simple dance sequence that communicates a feeling

watch and tell about a live or televised sports/dance event

identify the emotions expressed by participants and spectators at a sports/dance performance event

seek the company of others for physical activity when appropriate, both in and out of class

eagerly accept the challenge of new activities

give positive feedback to a partner/teammate

accept a challenge to exceed current personal best scores during practice

begin to verbally express feelings about participation and progress in skill development during class

demonstrate enjoyment of peers through cooperative behaviors and appropriate interactions

seek the company of others for physical activity when appropriate, both in and out of class

demonstrate appropriate audience behavior when observing others perform
