Madison Metropolitan School District
Career/Technical Education Department

Description of Career/Technical Training

The Madison Metropolitan School District supports a comprehensive career/technical program that evolves from the vocational core content areas identified within the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction: Agriculture, Business Education, Family/Consumer Science, Marketing Education, and Technology Education. In addition to these vocational core areas, sequenced course work is starting to appear in the areas of Aviation, Computer Networking, and Medical Occupations. All program elements are intended to permit individual students to consider and develop their own interests, abilities, and career aspirations.

The Madison Metropolitan School District is an active participant in the Dane County School To Work Consortium. In addition to work-based learning programs identified below, this consortium operates a Computer Internship, and Youth Apprenticeship Programs (YAPs) in several areas, including Tourism, Information Technology, Health, and Biotechnology. All programs have advisory councils composed of industry personnel and educators from the participating school districts.

Courses are currently taught at East High School. Students can participate in a non-paid work-based learning experience through our five acre land lab. FFA leadership is incorporated into coursework. Students from La Follete, Memorial and West may take classes at East if schedules and transportation can be arranged.

Programs exist at all four sites. Memorial and West High Schools have articulation agreements in Marketing Management for "Advanced Standing Credit" with the Madison Area Technical College. Both schools also have traditional COOPs in place. East, West and La Follette High Schools have DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapters; leadership is incorporated into coursework at these sites. La Follette students have access to a work experience program through the School to Work Transition Class taught by the Marketing instructor.

Technology Education

This is a required program at five middle schools, and all high schools have a sequence of courses in place for student selection. Principals of Engineering and Material Science are integrated courses at West, and are being planned for East and Memorial High Schools in the future. Construction courses are offered at East, West and La Follette. La Follette's construction program includes the construction of an energy efficient home. The school (and students) are acting as the general contractor, in collaboration with multiple area partners. Students also have access to Auto Tech and Graphic Arts YAPs through the county consortium.
