Coin Drive Raises Over $12,000
|
In response to the tremendous educational needs in the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the Madison School District's students, staff and families donated $12,206.82 to the Pascagoula (MS) School District. The funds were designated for teacher resources in the primary grades of elementary schools in Pascagoula. The effort that resulted in this donation, the Kids for Schools Coin Drive, was taken up by 33 Madison schools, student groups within the schools, parents and five other MMSD departments. In addition, MMSD schools initiated and supported their own fund drives for others in need where Katrina made an impact. The Kids for Schools Drive is the district's response through its schools and departments. Because of water damage and mold, the Pascagoula District had to gut many of its schools (95% of the 17 sq. miles that comprise the city of Pascagoula was submerged.) Teachers, especially primary grade teachers, lost a great deal of their resources. The Madison donation has been designated to replace items such as books and other materials for classroom libraries, manipulatives, and headphones and other equipment for listening centers.
